Monsanto
Monsanto is een chemiebedrijf uit de Verenigde Staten van Amerika. Het bedrijf produceert een reeks van producten voor de landbouw. Het bedrijf is de wereldleider in de genetische modificatie van zaden: het heeft op 674 biotechnologische producten een octrooi (april 2008).
Geschiedenis
Monsanto werd in 1901 in St. Louis, Missouri opgericht door de Ier John Francis Queeny. Met 5000 dollar begon hij in een oud warenhuis de kunstmatige zoetstof saccharine te produceren. Het bedrijf noemde hij naar de familienaam van zijn vrouw. De eerste klant was Coca Cola. Later ging het bedrijf ook cafeïne en vanilline produceren, waarvan Coca Cola eveneens de belangrijkste afnemer werd. Monsanto is het bedrijf dat Agent Orange ontwikkelde, het ontbladeringsmiddel dat in de Vietnamoorlog werd ingezet.
De GMO zaad monopolist
Het bedrijf dat de wereldvoedselmarkt in handen wil krijgen. Die het voor elkaar heeft gekregen om patenten op zaden te krijgen en zelfs boeren die last kregen van vervuiling van hun gewassen door hun GMO zaad voor de rechter daagden wegens schending van hun rechten en zelfs de meeste zaken wonnen.
Het bedrijf is verder samen met de Amerikaanse overheid patenthouder van een zogenaamd suicide gen waardoor de landbouwer na ieder oogst opnieuw zaad zal moeten kopen.
Het gevaar van dit soort methodes is dat wilde gewassen besmet kunnen raken en dus op termijn ook kunnen verdwijnen en de wereld afhankelijk wordt van deze monopolist.
Beheers je de voeding dan beheers je wereld, dat weten ze in Amerika maar al te goed. De energie markt (olie) dreigt men te verliezen door woekerprijzen en speculatie dus dan wordt voeding je volgende doel mbt wereldmacht. Wist je dat er alleen al in Alaska voor 200 jaar olie ligt dus dat we met zijn allen voor de gek worden gehouden, er is olie zat en ook het CO2 verhaal rammelt aan alle kanten.

Monsanto vs Schmeiser
Percy Schmeiser is a farmer from Bruno, Saskatchewan Canada whose Canola fields were contaminated with Monsanto's Round-Up Ready Canola. Monsanto's position was that it didn't matter whether Schmeiser knew or not that his canola field was contaminated with the Roundup Ready gene, or whether or not he took advantage of the technology (he didn't); that he must pay Monsanto their Technology Fee of $15./acre. The Supreme Court of Canada agreed with Schmeiser, ruling that he didn't have to pay Monsanto anything!

The safety of terminator seeds
Governments keep trying to find ways to make GM seeds safe and acceptable and they keep failing. They should stop trying. There is no such thing as a safe and acceptable form of Terminator. The EU should discontinue funding for research on “reversible transgenic sterility,” and re-assess funding for other research projects undertaken by Transcontainer. Rather than support research on coexistence to bail out the agbiotech industry, the EU should instead fund sustainable agricultural research that benefits farmers and the public. National governments should propose legislation to prohibit field-testing and commercial sale of Terminator technologies. Governments meeting at the 9th Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity in Bonn, Germany must strengthen the moratorium on GURTs by recommending a ban on the technology.

Terry Boehm, the Vice President of the Canadian National Farmers Union, and Arnold Taylor, the National President of the Canadian Organic Growers Association, held a press conference in the Parliament of New South Wales on February 4th, 2008 to warn Australian farmers to keep their crops free of genetic manipulation. They reported on Canada's 12-year experience of commercially growing genetically engineered (GE) canola. Terry Boehm said, "Since the introduction of GE canola in Canada, seed prices have risen dramatically and corporate control over farmers is tighter than ever before. There are constant threats of litigation to the extent that farmers are complying with company conditions disallowing them from saving seed rather than using their own because they are scared of being sued." They reported that contamination from GE canola was inevitable, because there is no way to segregate the non-GE crops from the GE crops due to wind and insect pollination unless there was a 26-kilometer buffer zone, and that was almost impossible. They said that almost all canola in Canada is now contaminated, and Monsanto continuously sues farmers which drives them off their land.

Biotechnologiereus Monsanto wijzigt niet alleen het genetisch materiaal van maïs, maar nu ook dat van varkens. Dat levert beesten op die sneller vetgemest kunnen worden en minder snel ziek worden en dat is uiteraard big business. Monsanto heeft dat genetisch materiaal gepatenteerd in nu al 160 landen en dat verschaft Monsanto een onwaarschijnlijke machtspositie. Want ook de varkens van eigenaars die nu nog nietsvermoedend rondknorren zouden Monsanto dan moeten betalen. Gepatenteerde varkens dus. Vandaag is Purchi Scheider veroordeeld en geruïneerd. De Canadese boer is een tegenstander van genetisch gemanipuleerde gewassen en zaden. En toch is dat gepatenteerd zaaigoed op zijn akkers gevonden. Maar dat kwam door de bestuiving van de omliggende velden zo beweerd hij. De rechtbank veroordeelt hem toch tot het betalen van miljoenen dollars schade vergoeding aan de patenthouder van het zaaigoed het Amerikaanse genetisch chemiebedrijf Monsanto. Andrew Kimbrell, van het centrum voor voedselveiligheid, zegt: "Er is weinig pers aandacht voor Monsanto's rechtszaken tegen boeren. Uit onze net voltooide studie blijkt dat ze er duizenden gedreigd hebben met processen wegens patentschending". Dat er ruim 129 processen zijn aangespannen tegen boeren waarbij ze miljoenen opstreken. Monsanto met zijn enorme juridische team en al zijn macht pakt een kleine boer in South Dakota, Nebraska of Indiana aan. Ze betreden onbevoegd hun land en verzinnen vaak leugens over hen. Ze vervolgen en ruïneren ze vaak.
Veiligheid onkruidverdelger discutabel
Amerikaans wetenschapper Don Huber twijfelt aan de veiligheid van de populaire onkruidverdelger Roundup, geproduceerd door Monsanto. Het zou ziekten bij planten en vee kunnen veroorzaken. Dat schrijft de emeritus professor van de Purdue University in de VS in een brief aan de Amerikaanse minister van Landbouw Vilsack, naar aanleiding van de ontdekking van een nieuwe ziekteverwekker door een team van planten- en dierwetenschappers.
